Understanding Bhutan’s currency and payment options will help ensure a smooth trip. Here’s everything you need to know about managing money in Bhutan.
The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN)
The Ngultrum is Bhutan’s official currency, pegged at par with the Indian Rupee (which is also widely accepted). Notes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000.
Exchange Rates
The Ngultrum is not traded internationally, so you’ll need to exchange currency upon arrival. US Dollars, Euros, and British Pounds can be exchanged at banks and authorized money changers.
ATMs
- ATMs are available in major towns (Thimphu, Paro, Punakha)
- Most accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard)
- Withdrawal limits apply (usually 10,000-20,000 BTN per transaction)
- ATMs may be scarce in remote areas – carry enough cash
Credit Cards
- Accepted at larger hotels, some restaurants, and souvenir shops
- Not widely accepted in smaller towns or local shops
- A processing fee (3-5%) may apply
- Always carry cash as backup
Tips for Managing Money
- Tour packages are paid in USD, so personal expenses are your main cash needs
- Tipping is not traditionally expected but appreciated for excellent service
- Handicrafts and souvenirs can be relatively expensive
- Keep small denominations for tips and small purchases
