ETIQUETTE FOR DZONGS & MONASTERIES

Learn the proper dress code and behavior expected when visiting sacred sites, dzongs, monasteries, and temples in Bhutan.

Bhutan’s dzongs and monasteries are active religious sites, not just tourist attractions. Following proper etiquette shows respect for Bhutanese culture and enhances your experience.

Dress Code

  • Cover your shoulders: Wear long sleeves or bring a shawl
  • Cover your legs: Long pants or skirts below the knee
  • No hats: Remove headwear before entering
  • No bare feet: Socks are acceptable if you need to remove shoes
  • Neat appearance: Avoid torn or very casual clothing

Inside Temples & Dzongs

  • Walk clockwise: Always circumambulate religious structures clockwise
  • Remove shoes: Before entering temple halls (carry a bag for them)
  • Don’t touch: Religious objects, statues, or thangka paintings
  • Photography: Usually prohibited inside temple halls – always ask first
  • Keep voice low: Speak quietly and turn off phone ringers
  • Step over, not on: Don’t step on the threshold

General Behavior

  • Don’t point at religious images with your finger (use open palm)
  • Don’t turn your back to religious images
  • Accept blessings graciously (often holy water or rice)
  • Small offerings (cash in offering boxes) are appreciated but not required
  • Follow your guide’s instructions – they know the specific rules

During Festivals

Festivals (tshechus) have additional protocols. Your guide will advise you, but generally:

  • Find seating along the sides – the front is for monks and officials
  • Stand when the thongdrel (giant religious banner) is displayed
  • Accept blessings offered during the ceremonies
