Bhutan’s high altitude and remote location require some health preparation. Here’s what you need to know to stay healthy during your trip.
Altitude Sickness
Many areas in Bhutan are above 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), with some passes reaching 3,800+ meters. Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.
Symptoms
- Headache, dizziness
- Nausea, loss of appetite
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty sleeping
- Fatigue
Prevention
- Ascend gradually – your itinerary should allow acclimatization time
- Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water
- Avoid alcohol during the first few days
- Rest when needed
- Consider Diamox (acetazolamide) – consult your doctor before travel
Vaccinations
Consult your doctor at least 6-8 weeks before travel. Commonly recommended vaccinations:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid
- Tetanus-diphtheria
- Routine vaccinations (MMR, flu)
Medical Facilities
Bhutan has basic medical facilities in main towns. For serious conditions, evacuation to Bangkok or Delhi may be necessary. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential.
What to Bring
- Personal prescription medications (in original packaging with doctor’s letter)
- Basic first aid kit
- Hand sanitizer
- Altitude sickness medication (if recommended)
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
